Choosing The Perfect Guest Bed

One of the key features of any guest room is the bed. You want your guests to be comfortable, even if you must purchase the bed on a budget. The following are some things to consider when shopping for your guest room bed set.

Size

Unless all of your guests are children, it is best to opt for a queen size mattress in the guest bedroom. This way you have a comfortable bed for both singles and couples when they visit. A twin is only suitable for child guests, so it doesn't serve much purpose in the guest room. You can go with a full-size bed if space is tight, although this bed may feel cramped and small for some couples. Queen size mattresses, along with the bedding to fit them, are comparable in price to a full but provide a lot more comfort and space.

Support

You don't want your guests to suffer back pain or discomfort from the mattress you choose, but you likely don't want to buy a top of the line pillowtop or adjustable bed for an infrequently used guest room. Fortunately, you can get good support without investing in a fancy mattress. Opt for moderate firmness, as this is most likely to be comfortable for both those that prefer soft mattresses and those that prefer a firmer mattress.

Material

The two main material options are foam and spring mattresses. Spring mattresses can provide extra firmness, but they are more likely to suffer damage or become broken down over time. Foam can be the perfect option for a guest bed because it contours to each individual sleeper so it is more likely to provide comfort to a multitude of different guests with different sleeping styles. Movement isn't transferred through foam as easily as springs, either, so this can provide more comfort for couples that are used to sleeping in larger beds. Another option is to opt for a spring mattress that has a foam topper, although this type of mattress may cost more.

Frame

Once you have the mattress for your guest bed, you need a frame. Opt for a sturdy frame that won't move or make noise in the event your guest is prone to tossing and turning. Wooden frames are preferable to cheap metal frames. Platform frames are nice because you won't need to purchase a box spring if you opt for a foam mattress. Another option is to choose a frame with included under-bed storage drawers so you can also use the guest room for storage.
